Since its establishment in 1987 the University of Akureyri (UNAK) has grown rapidly to an important and progressive milieu of higher education and research. UNAK has three faculties: Business and Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Health Sciences. UNAK offers a Master's programme in Polar Law, taught in English, as well as an LLM in Polar Law and a Diploma in Polar Law.

University Centre of the Westfjords is a small centre offering  programmes and summer schools in cooperation with universities in Iceland and abroad. Study options include one international Master's programme in Coastal and Marine Management, in cooperation with the University of Akureyri, three-week courses taught in English all year round, summer schools and field schools.
